Most weeks, it wouldn’t be a big deal that Boone Bonnema ran on to the field carrying an American flag.
But this week, it was a statement of unity for the Zeeland East football team.
The Chix used the unity and energy on homecoming to roll past Fruitport 56-14 to earn an automatic playoff bid at 6-0.
“It meant a lot. We are proud of our country and want to show our support, so we decided to come out with the American flag,” Bonnema said. “Everyone agreed on it. We all have different opinions but we came together and decided to bring it out. That was really cool. We have really grown as a team.”
The Chix viewed it as a coming-together moment.
“We want to support our country,” running back Josh Fusco said. “It’s hard seeing the older players in the NFL and college taking a knee. We wanted to show we appreciate everyone in our country.”
The inspired Chix came out with energy immediately.
Fusco took the opening kickoff return down to the Fruitport 17-yard line. Two plays later, Keegan Ensing ran in a touchdown for a 7-0 lead.
Fruitport was able to run one play before Fusco got into the middle of things again, intercepting a pass. Two plays later Ensing threw a TD pass to Cobe Huizenga and it was quickly 14-0.
“It is homecoming. We had a lot of people here and we were excited to perform for everyone,” Fusco said. “We wanted to put on a show. We had the energy going. This win means a lot. It puts us in the playoffs.”
The Chix weren’t done.
